Due to increasing complexity, the challenges for a sustainable and economical structure within a municipality have increased. This also includes monitoring and analysis systems as well as cost-efficient hardware.
A sensor is usually not the decisive cost factor, but the associated electricity and internet connection. This alone makes most applications uneconomical. At locations where the use of sensors would make the most sense (e.g. remote locations), it is usually not possible to set up WLAN or install cables for sensors.
The solution with Eliona
The water reservoirs were retrofitted with digital level sensors and IoT actuators. The individual sensors were integrated into Eliona via LoRaWAN. This enables a flexible, cost-effective and low-maintenance method of monitoring the fill levels and controlling the extinguishing water valves.
The low-maintenance level sensors work via LoRaWAN and last for many years in battery operation thanks to the parameterizable transmission interval. The batteries of the sensors in the municipality of Disentis have not yet had to be replaced since commissioning in 2018.
What are the advantages of LPWAN networks and LoRaWan?
As the case in the municipality of Disentis shows, the use of this technology can save costs for hardware (dedicated line, etc.) and maintenance. In addition, wireless IoT sensors offer the greatest possible flexibility in use and can be (re)placed anywhere.
LoRaWan technology is also very secure. As the end devices are used over a very long period of time, the security mechanisms are future-proof. This technology uses standardized and field-tested end-to-end encryption algorithms in line with the current state of the art. This means that this technology can also be used in sensitive environments.
